Regarding Methods of Extracting:
Herbs can be used in a variety of forms, and can be extracted in a variety of mediums. Water, wine, vinegar, oil, glycerin, and grain alcohol can all be used to extract the plant properties into usable form. I use alcohol for several reasons:
- The resulting herbal tinctures are quite potent (generally 2-3 times stronger than the equivalent amount of dried herb in capsule form).
- Alcohol extracts have a very long shelf life.
- The alcohol-extracted plant properties absorb very quickly into the system.
- Multiple extracts are more convenient to take than multiple cups of tea or handfuls of pills.
Occasionally a person is highly sensitive to alcohol. In this case, I recommend that the dose be placed in a small quantity of very hot water, allowed to cool to drinking temperature, and the alcohol will have then evaporated. This is also useful for children's herbs
